About ORCA

Orthopaedic Research Collaborative East Anglia

The Orthopaedic Research Collaborative East Anglia (ORCA) is a trainee-led research initiative committed to advancing orthopaedic knowledge, clinical practice, and academic development across the East of England.

Founded by orthopaedic trainees and supported by senior clinicians, ORCA was established to promote a culture of collaborative, high-quality research and to provide structured educational opportunities in research methodology and evidence-based practice.

Our Vision

To create a connected and empowered network of orthopaedic surgeons and trainees who lead, contribute to, and disseminate meaningful clinical research that improves patient outcomes and drives innovation in trauma and orthopaedics.

Our Objectives

  • Facilitate Collaboration: Connect trainees, consultants, and institutions to design and deliver impactful regional and national research projects.

  • Promote Academic Development: Equip trainees with the knowledge and skills to conduct independent research and meet the academic requirements for CCT and beyond.

  • Deliver Research Education: Provide structured and accessible research training, including our annual Cambridge Research Methodology Course.

  • Support Publication and Dissemination: Encourage and assist with the publication and presentation of trainee-led research at conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.

Our Activities

  • Coordinating multi-centre audits and clinical trials

  • Running the Cambridge Research Methodology Course – a free, compulsory course for T&O CCT trainees, now in its 6th year

  • Hosting regular regional journal clubs to promote critical appraisal skills and evidence-based discussion among trainees

  • Offering mentorship, advice, and support for ethics applications, project development, and publishing

  • Building partnerships with academic institutions, NHS trusts, and national research networks

Who We Are

ORCA is led by a committee of orthopaedic trainees across the East of England, with support from consultant supervisors, academic advisors, and the University of Cambridge. Our structure is designed to be inclusive, transparent, and trainee-focused.
